MAS Freedom Advocates for Due Process and Fairness in Case of Detained Houston Muslim Cleric
The recent arrest and detention of Sheikh Zoubir Bouchikhi, for alleged immigration violations, has sent shock waves through the Houston, Texas Muslim community.
Sheikh Zoubir, a Muslim cleric with a wife and four children, is a brilliant religious scholar and committed community leader in the Greater Houston area. His detention raised serious concern by legal experts and civil rights advocates because of the way in which his immigration status as a religious worker was challenged by immigration
MAS Houston and MAS Freedom, the civil and human rights division of the Muslim American Society, have both expressed grave concerns about the Sheikh’s detention. MAS Freedom has been involved with similar cases involving Muslim clerics and frivolous challenges to their immigration status, and we believe that there may be a pattern of targeting honest, law-abiding Muslim religious leaders for deportation without due process or just cause.
Mahdi Bray, Executive Director of MAS Freedom stated, “Both the incarceration and possible deportation of Sheikh Zoubir are deeply troubling. We are also concerned with other allegations against numerous Muslim clerics, many of whom have been legal U.S. residents who have served the American Muslim community with distinction.”
Bray further stated that, “These law-abiding Muslim religious leaders have made outstanding contributions to the both the Muslim community and the larger interfaith community as well. Our success with these cases has always depended on both excellent legal representation and the full support of the Muslim community as well.”
