Archive for March, 2009

(I wrote this last night but just noticed it was still in draft mode….)

I recently returned home from an absolutely incredible night at The Muslim Link Fundraiser.  I wanted to share some general thoughts and recap the night for those who weren’t able to attend (you guys really missed out)…

Insha’Allah this Sunday, March 29th, The Muslim Link- a DC Metropolitan area newspaper focused on connecting the area community- will be hosting a fundraiser with longtime MP George Galloway as its keynote speaker.

It’s no secret that I feel a muslim-run press outlet has some inherent value to it.  We live in a society inundated by opinions, the majority of which are motivated and conveyed through a prism of secular thought.  Within this context, our community becomes one who’s emotions and concerns become dictated to us by the press, and in doing so we lose track of what we really need to focus on.

Unfortunately, even most Muslim opinion has become influenced by the mainstream media, and this is very apparent by perusing the Muslim blogosphere.  The issue of the day is the economy, and yesterdays issues including civil rights and foreign policy have somehow fallen by the wayside.  Anyways, just my 2 cents…Allahu Alam.

For those interested in supporting the Muslim Link and its efforts, I implore you to attend this Sunday.  You can find more details about the event on the Muslim Links website at: http://muslimlinkpaper.com/

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen, Rahimahullah

All praise is due to Allaah Who has promised those with patience a reward without measure. He has rewarded those who are thankful for His bounties with preservation and protection as well as with a generous increase with regard to these bounties. I testify that there is nothing worthy of worship except Allaah, with Whom there is no associate, beyond any shadow of doubt. I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger; the leader of all Messengers and the chosen one from among all mankind. May the blessings of Allaah be upon him, his family, his companions and all those who will follow them sincerely until the Day of Judgement.

by Sheikh Khâlid b. Sa`ûd al-Rashûd, presiding judge at the Saudi Grievance Board

“There is no creature on Earth except that its sustenance is upon Allah. He knows its habitation and its repository. All is in a clear Record.” [Sûrah Hûd: 6]

In this verse, Allah is speaking about His dominion over nature on the greatest scale. When Allah says: “There is no creature on Earth”, He is referring to terrestrial life in general. The meaning is that if Allah did not provide sustenance for Earth’s creatures, then life on Earth would come to an end. This does not mean that Allah provides for each and every specific creature on Earth all of the time.

As a kid snow used to be sooooo much fun.  Even in college, sometimes I’d be making serious dua for snow to get out of an exam or something…..

Now, snow has lost much of its luster.  When I see snow, I see traffic jams and long commute times to work- and yeah, they make us go to work no matter how bad the snow gets :(.  So you can imagine how I felt when I woke up this morning and saw 6-8 inches of snow outside!! My sister was partying like she won the lottery or something, and I was thinking ‘arrrrggggghh!’

On the brighter side, the roads were completely empty alhamdulillah.  Cool quote to end with:

Abu Haazim al-Zaahid mentioned gratitude of all the physical faculties: (It means) refraining from sin, and using them to help one to do acts of obedience. Then he said: As for the one who gives thanks with his tongue but does not give thanks with all of his physical faculties, his likeness is that of a man who has a cloak and takes hold of the edge of it, but does not put it on, so it is of no benefit to him against cold or heat or snow or rain.
